I made something AWESOME, and I started with these three thrift store shirts (which cost me fifty cents, fifty cents and a buck fifty, respectively). It took me two days of nearly straight labor (I even forgot to eat lunch on day one, I was having so much fun), and the finished product has left me as excited as a little kid on Christmas.

So what did I make? I made final and definite proof that I am an astoundingly HUGE capitol-G Geek. Here, have a hint:

Oh yeah. I made myself a Batman shirt... but not just any batman shirt. Behold! The process.

Look Ma, Handstitching!
Look Ma, Handstitching!

Is this awesome enough? NO!
Is this awesome enough? NO!

A hand-stitched appliqué makes for a pretty awesome shirt, but is it finished? Oh no. I can get WAY geekier than that.

Mmm, detail work.
Mmm, detail work.

With much pinning and sewing (by machine and by hand) and measuring and cutting and vast, sad amounts of seam ripping and re-pinning/measuring/cutting/sewing, detail was added. Lots of detail. Like, for example, a utility belt with four functional pockets:

Complete with utility belt...
Complete with utility belt...

Or a hood with bat ears, which I stuffed so they'd stand up:

...and bat-eared hood!
...and bat-eared hood...

Or even black forearms with requisite trio of arm spikes.

...and arm spikes...
...and arm spikes!

Oh yes. Behold, the sum of many hours of work compressed into not-many frantic days, my favorite t-shirt reconstruction thus far, new life breathed into a pile of sad and abandoned thrift store shirts, the crowning glory of my crafty geekery: my Batman shirt.

Da na na na na na na na BATMAN!!
Da na na na na na na na BATMAN!!

But what's an awesome Batman shirt without some equally awesome action shots? Nothing, I tell you!

Action shot: Batgirl runs to the rescue.
Action shot: Batgirl runs to the rescue.

Looking all Heroical.
Looking all Heroical.

Just another day as an awesome superhero: running, striking heroic poses...

Batgirl vs Disturbing Playground Ornament, round 1!
Batgirl vs Disturbing Playground Ornament, round 1!

...fighting deeply disturbing playground statuary.

Bam! Pow!
Bam! Pow!

Oh no!
Oh no!

Oh no, caught! What will our hero do now?

More looking all Heroical. It"s a difficult job, but...
More looking all Heroical. It's a difficult job, but...

Run away! Then look heroical again, of course.

w00t!

Ooo, the blog post has hit StumbleUpon? I know the Craftster post has (I stumbled upon it myself, to my great surprise- if you stumble on yourself accidentally, have you stubbed your internet toes?).

Thanks so much! I kind of wanted to do a Flash hoodie out of a sweatshirt so it'd be warm for jogging, and I haven't found a red sweatshirt at the thrift store yet- maybe I'll have to give up sometime soon and just buy the fabric and go from there.

We just love this and the theme song has my son dancing! He has been wearing a batman costume everywhere for over a year. Every morning he has to watch the old 60s tv shows. It took me a while but I have embraced this and have accumulated belts and shirts and rings for myself but this is amazing! Adore this and wish I was talented enough to attempt something as awesome as this!

Looks like you kicked some mammoth a$$ there. I think I'll stumble upon this too.

I want to marry you. I'll cook and clean

In other news, exactly why I want to marry you will be on this tumblr here, soon http://albertinho.tumblr.com/ (I queue posts)

You are officially getting love from Australia. And, partially, Brazil.

PS: I tried to OpenID this yet alas, it does not work

Re: I want to marry you. I'll cook and clean

I believe this is the fifth or sixth marriage proposal I've received in relation to this shirt. Wow! And here I thought I'd never beat my three-in-less-than-two-months record from the Masai in Tanzania. Thank you!

Apologies for the OpenID fail; I'm moving this entire blog to Wordpress specifically because LJ is so unfriendly to off-site commenters. Alas, that means I lose all these great comments, but hey. I figure I'll make them back.

wow

i have to say, this is f'n amazing, i stumbled upon it. i do not sew alot, but i do pillows and little stuff like that and knit a little. but i will say, i am determined to do this !! i have a question tho. since this is my first time, how would i make it for a bigger girl. i wear a 13/14 but a big bust and i would hate to mess it up. but its AMAZING

Posted at: March 17th, 2010 04:26 pm (UTC)
Re: wow

I don't think making it for a larger size would be significantly different from making it for a smaller size. It was constructed on my body form specifically to fit me- all the basic steps would be the same to fit someone else, just with different measurements. The grey shirt I started with was roughly my size (though I added darts, because I like the structure darts give)- start with one your size and go from there.

If you usually do pillows and the like (which are usually a woven fabric), I'll bet the knit fabric will be new to you. Just in case it is, I'd say make sure to use a ball-point needle and remember to use zig-zag stitches for any seam that needs to be able to stretch.

It's nice to see one of the 17 female geeks express her geekery so openly. Kudos to you and your brilliant idea!

Re: Brilliant

As a female geek who thus knows other female geeks, and who has gotten many responses from female geeks to this post alone (much less my other geekery) I must say that I'm either unusually well-connected, or you have severely underestimated your count.

Thanks, by the way!

Comic (Batman) - Jason crowbar Tim

I just came across this via craftster, and I just have to announce my utter and complete love for this. I made myself a (kid)flash hoodie way back when, but that pales in comparison to this sheer genius!

SO MUCH FLAILING GEEKY LOVE =D

I'll leave now heeee...
